Mission
The Center’s mission is to enhance Florida State University College of Law’s nationally ranked programs, which are taught by nationally recognized legal experts who produce impactful scholarship and provide a first-rate education to law students concentrating in areas of law relating to the environment; to engage in pioneering research and enrichment events that will help develop cutting-edge scholarship and policy; and to marshal legal skills for addressing challenges in the areas of environmental, land use, energy and natural resources law. The Center’s training, research and service must have strong theoretical groundings, provide practical skills for the practice of law, advocacy and policymaking, and be interdisciplinary in pedagogy.

The FSU College of Law Election Law Center provides objective, evidence-based analysis of constitutional, statutory, and regulatory issues in election law, working with election administrators, legislators, and policymakers at all levels to improve election laws, regulations, and procedures. It ensures robust voting opportunities, promotes election integrity, and strengthens public confidence in electoral outcomes. Additionally, it offers unique learning experiences for FSU Law students, serves as a resource for election officials and lawmakers, develops comprehensive election law resources, and hosts conferences and training sessions. It aims to position FSU College of Law as a trusted authority on election law and enhance public understanding of the electoral system.

Mission
The First Amendment Clinic at Florida State University College of Law was created in partnership with the FSU Institute for Governance and Civics (IGC) and provides pro bono legal representation to individuals and organizations across the country whose rights to free speech, religious freedom, freedom of association and assembly, or freedom of the press are at risk. The clinic defends these fundamental liberties in a wide range of contexts, including public forums, educational institutions, digital platforms, government settings, and private workplaces.
Students are at the center of this work, leading every stage of client representation under the supervision of experienced faculty. They conduct client interviews, investigate facts, research legal issues, develop litigation strategies, draft court filings and amicus briefs, and advocate before administrative bodies and courts. Alongside this hands-on work, students participate in a weekly seminar that deepens their understanding of First Amendment law, hones their advocacy and lawyering skills, and encourages critical reflection on the broader societal, political, and ethical dimensions of their work. Through real-world litigation and collaborative legal practice, students emerge as thoughtful, skilled advocates for constitutional rights. The clinic also serves as a center for broader engagement and dialogue on First Amendment issues, hosting conferences, lectures, debates, and other events to foster discussion and scholarship within the law school and beyond.
The clinic is led by Professor Denise M. Harle, a clinical professor and nationally recognized expert in constitutional law. She brings decades of high-level legal experience to her role, having served as senior counsel at Alliance Defending Freedom, deputy solicitor general in the Florida Attorney General’s Office, and a partner at Shutts & Bowen LLP. Professor Harle has briefed and argued cases involving complex constitutional questions before both state and federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court. A frequent commentator and invited speaker on constitutional matters, she has been featured in major national media outlets and has testified before the U.S. Senate on issues of constitutional significance.

The Research Center serves as the law library for Florida State University. Our primary mission is to train our students to produce highly sophisticated and cost-effective legal research. We're here to help!

Membership Benefits
The mission of the FSU Law Research Center is to foster research and learning for the students and faculty of the FSU College of Law. We offer practical legal research instruction, an experienced and helpful staff, and an incredible array of information resources and services. Access to over 400 databases of law and law-related information is available on and off campus. Our extensive collections also include 500,000+ volumes of United States and international law resources. The multidisciplinary holdings of the University Libraries are available a short walk from the Law School.


WORKSHOPS & CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
Each academic year, the Research Center Workshop offers a series of short (usually 20 to 30 minute) training sessions focused on research skills or legal resources. Students who attend the required number of workshops will be eligible to earn Legal Research Certificate that signifies their commitment to learning specialized and advanced legal research.
